Michael
S. Sherrill received a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from
the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1982. He
graduated from the University of Iowa School of Law in 1984.
He is licensed as an attorney in Minnesota and is registered
to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office
as a patent attorney. He is also licensed to practice before
the United States Court for the District of Minnesota, United
States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, and United States
Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Following graduation
from law school, Mike practiced law with the Minneapolis law
firm of Merchant & Gould for approximately six years.
Following his tenure at Merchant & Gould, Mike practiced
law with Faegre & Benson for approximately five years.
Following his natural entrepreneurial bent, in 1996 Mike founded
Sherrill Law Offices, located in the Minneapolis-St. Paul
suburb of White Bear Lake, Minnesota. In his 19-year career,
Mike has developed extensive expertise in numerous areas of
intellectual property law including assessing the patentability
of new concepts; evaluating the availability of trademarks;
procuring patent, trademark and copyright protection; identifying
and protecting trade secrets; evaluating patent infringement;
assessing patent validity; conducting trademark opposition
and cancellation proceedings; auditing intellectual property
assets; and development, maintenance and enforcement of a
strong intellectual property portfolio.
Mike has extensive patent experience in several
technical areas including chemical, biochemical and mechanical
products and processes. One of the technical areas which Mike
has obtained significant expertise is the manufacture and
use of industrial detersive systems for which he has prepared
approximately 50 patent applications. The patents cover such
areas as encapsulation of active components, formulation techniques,
dispensing techniques, processing of articles using the detersive
systems, etc. Other technical areas in which Mike has experience
include manufacture and use of adhesive compositions, manufacture
of expanded porous plastics, synthesis of steroids, use of
denaturant gradient gel electrophoresis, manufacture of conveyor
systems, manufacture of high speed adhesive tape applications
and manufacture of power tools.
Mike’s practice is international in scope
and includes the procurement of patent, trademark, and copyright
protection throughout the world including strategic utilization
of the multinational patenting system developed through the
Patent Cooperation Treaty.
Mike is married and the proud father of
a daughter and three sons.
